Care instructions for alpaca wool

We are asked every day in our shop how to wash your favorite sweater properly. We have noticed that there is a lot of uncertainty about this topic. Many customers ask with the assumption that hand-knitted wool clothing has to be washed by hand. We often see relieved faces when we present our care instructions, because our alpaca wool can be washed in the washing machine without any problems.

Alpaca wool is characterized by its special properties such as softness, durability and the ability to thermoregulate, which makes it a valued material for high-quality textiles. Below you will find important tips on how to properly care for alpaca wool to ensure the longevity and quality of your garments.

Proper care of alpaca wool

Despite the assumption that hand-knitted wool items always need to be hand washed, alpaca wool is surprisingly easy to care for. Our Alpakita products are designed to be easily machine washed, which is a pleasant surprise for many of our customers. For optimal care of your alpaca wool, we recommend choosing a special wool wash cycle at 30° and a low spin speed. The question of the ideal detergent for alpaca wool can be answered by recommending a mild, liquid wool detergent without fabric softener in order to preserve the natural properties of the fiber.

Self-cleaning properties

One of the outstanding properties of alpaca wool is its natural dirt-repellent properties and self-cleaning ability. To remove light odors, it is often sufficient to air the garments, which can reduce the number of washes and extend the life of the textiles.

Dealing with stains and pilling

If you notice any stains or pilling, don't hesitate to put your alpaca wool garments in the washing machine. It is important to follow the specific washing instructions for alpaca wool to protect the material. After washing, it is advisable to dry the textiles flat to preserve their shape.

smoothing of alpaca wool

Iron

If wrinkles appear in your alpaca wool sweater, hanging it up overnight or wearing the garment may be enough, as body heat will help to smooth out the material. To adjust the size, the garment can be turned inside out and gently ironed, placing a damp cloth between the iron and the wool.

Since we neither iron nor steam the clothes for the little ones, they grow a little just by wearing them. Do you want the sweater to be even bigger? Then you can turn it inside out and iron it. We recommend placing a damp cloth between the wool and the iron.

Avoiding high temperatures

It is essential not to wash alpaca wool at too high a temperature, as high temperatures such as those found in tumble dryers can damage the fine fibers. Therefore, the use of a tumble dryer should be avoided.
